Example

Find the equation of the locus of the points of intersection of the two given lines.

y + k ( x - 2 ) = 0 ........... (1)

ky - ( x + 2 ) = 0 ........... (2)

Sol. Rewriting (1),

(i)     when    x ≠ 2

                  k = (-y)/(x-2)

substituting into (2)

                  x²   + y² = 4

(ii)    when     x = 2,

        (1) gives y = 0

        But ( x,y )   = ( 2,0 )   does not satisfy (2)

Therefore, the equation of the locus of the points of intersection is :

            x²   + y² = 4       (( x,y )   ≠   ( 2,0 ))
